- Pros
Competitive and addictive gameplay, with lots of variation between Champions. Easy to learn, despite having complex gameplay and customization elements. Thriving online community with fair micro transactions. Free.
- Cons
Runes and Masteries aren't as useful as they should be early in the game. Some Champions are overpowered.
- Bottom Line
League of Legends, the incredibly popular PC title from Riot Games, continues to shine as the crown jewel of the MOBA genre.
League of Legends, Riot Games' free-to-play, multiplayer online battle arena title is, simply put, the best MOBA game you can buy. Its gameplay incorporates elements of role playing, tower defense, and real-time strategy—a combination that differentiates it from the many cookie cutter MOBAs flooding the market. More importantly, the playable characters (known as Champions) show a deep level of variation, and each match's competition level increases as the game sinks you deeper and deeper into addiction. For these reasons, League of Legends is a no-brainer Editors' Choice PC game.

Welcome To Summoner's Rift
Despite its many gameplay and customization variables, League of Legends is a surprisingly accessible MOBA that boasts a learning curve that's simpler than other true MOBAs. Dota 2, one of its main competitors, has many more moving parts, such as interactions with Creeps and absurd consequences for dying. The exclusion of these mechanics lets League of Legends flourish as a top-tier MOBA, without oversimplifying the experience.
Here's how it works: League of Legends takes the usual five vs. five, two team, three-lane approach of your everyday MOBA, and adds an ebb and flow that makes offense and defense interchangeable. Matches take place on the Summoner's Rift map, with each team's base located on either side. Between the three lanes lies a jungle that hosts the creatures you slay for extra buffs. Thankfully, League of Legends wisely lets you kill the beasties on the opponent's side of the field. This not only prevents the opposition from powering up, but lets you claim those buffs, as well.
Meanwhile, minions travel the lanes from each team's base to attack the other team's defenses. They can be slaughtered for gold and experience, which lets you level up an ability's proficiency. Each team has three turrets per lane that attempt to destroy opposing minions and Champions, but those active turrets leave several Inhibitors—the structures that block your valuable Nexus—vulnerable. This is a vital gameplay element, as the game ends when your Nexus is wrecked. You need to attack and defend wisely.
Once an Inhibitor's destroyed, dangerous Super Minions emerge from the Nexus to inflict big damage on the rival team. Matches usually last from 35 to 45 minutes, and the last few minutes usually end in chaotic team vs. team brawls amongst the tattered bases and toppled defenses. However, Inhibitors respawn if the match isn't wrapped up quickly enough.

We Are the Champions
Success is the result of becoming intimately familiar with your Champions. For example, the frequently banned Mundo is ideal for top-lane play because of his high Hit Point regeneration, ability pokes that make it easy to attack cautiously, and Escape Utility. Unfortunately, overpowered Champions aren't uncommon, which requires Riot Games to dish out a steady stream of nerfs to bring them down to an even playing field. This is a problem that leads to a lot of frustration in the League of Legends community.
Other Champions are best used to make others shine. For example, Blitzcrank, my personal favorite, is best used in a support role for his long-range grapple ability that reels in opponents.
Champions also have their own unique passive abilities besides the ones they have active during combat. Annie, the Dark Child, has a passive ability that temporarily stuns opponents after she casts four consecutive spells. League of Legends has more than 100 Champions to buy or unlock, so there's a lot to explore in terms of passive and active ability variation. I'll discuss buying Champions in a bit.
Most abilities cost a minimal amount of Magic Points to cast, and are balanced by relatively brief cooldown periods. Because of this, combat is fast, and opponents can be viciously bullied with one spell after another. On the other hand, the tables can be turned in an instant with proper planning. Skillshots add to the already-frantic combat. Aiming just right as the aggressor, and executing timely dodges as the defender, is the core of League of Legend's fun hit-and-run gameplay.
Gold Farming, Item Building, and Customization
The gold you farm from killing minions is used to buy equipment that boosts base stats such as Movement Speed, Attack Power, and Magic Points. Minions are very easy to kill, but, fortunately, you don't lose any gold if you happen to bite it while battling them. This, along with League of Legend's 'recommended' item list makes item-building less of a hassle than the process is in a game like Smite. The 'denying strategy,' a playstyle associated with Dota 2 in which you kill a minion or tower on your own team to keep the enemy from earning gold, is a non-factor in League of Legends. This keeps your focus on opposing enemy Champions and prevents minion interactions from becoming tedious.
You earn Experience Points after every match—even if you lose. Every level-up unlocks a Mastery Point that enhance Offense, Defense, or Utility skills. That said, their additions are hardly noticeable in casual play.
Influence Points unlock additional Champions, cosmetic skins, or Runes. Up to 30 Runes can be used per Rune Page, and they can be replaced by more powerful Runes as you level up. Unfortunately, like Masteries, the stat increases Runes provide have little to no notable advantage during matches the way equipment does, and it's one of the weaker elements of Champion customization.
You can also purchase Riot Points with real currency to buy Champions, skins, and Runes if you lack the patience to unlock them. Champions cost anywhere from $2 to $8, and with 10 default Champions in constant rotation to play as each week, you'll find one that suits your play style. Thankfully, this is optional; it isn't necessary to buy Champions in order to have an edge in matches.
Ranked Matches and Other Modes
Maxing out your Summoner level to 30, and unlocking/purchasing 16 Champions (the maximum amount), is when the real competition begins. After competing in a large number of normal matches and meeting the prerequisites, ranked solo and duo matches become available. In these modes, League Points are on the line if you win or lose.
League Points are used to rank players in tiers from Bronze to Challenger, with each higher-level tier holding more skillful teammates and combatants. Mistakes become more costly as you move up the ladder. The most skillful players set your squad on a downward spiral in an instant, changing League from a casual game to a true eSport. This is where Runes and Masteries become very important, as their added stat bonuses have more of an impact.
There are other modes outside of Summoner's Rift to dabble with when you need a break from the core gameplay. The Crystal Scar, Howling Abyss, and Twisted Treeline maps are each fun combat zones. Crystal Scar is a small 5 vs. 5 lane map that focuses on capturing points, while Howling Abyss places random Champions on a single-lane map and plays like the final five minutes of a Summoner's Rift match. Twisted Treeline has a similar approach to Summoner's Rift, but limits teams to 3 vs 3. These matches usually play out in significantly less time than the usual 35- to 45-minute Summoner's Rift matches, and are great for a quick pick-up game if you don't have an hour to kill.
Graphics and Specs
League of Legends' vivid colors and campy artwork make the character models and environment pop. Some Champions are based on mythological creatures and figures of historical mythologies; others are quirky, tongue-and-cheek characters. There's a lot of visual charm. League of Legends' low-impact graphics can be played on any modern set-up, and moves at a 60-frames-per-second clip. You can tweak environments, character models, and special effects, too.
The online client is a bit ancient, however. It can take a while to find people to play with and to start a match. That said, League of Legends rarely suffers from any online gameplay hiccups.
A True Legend
League of Legends' accessibility is one of its shining points, but that does not mean it lacks complex core gameplay elements. The way skillshots, cooldowns, unique abilities, and equipment work in tandem makes League of Legends the face of MOBA gaming, outclassing the likes of Dota 2 and Heroes of the Storm. Once you've gotten used to those constant opposing motions, gameplay becomes satisfying, competitive, addicting, and impressively fluid.
