PSA for the new Xbox One controller drivers. How to fix error 37 for Windows 7.
I've noticed that since the drivers for the Xbox One controller have been released, numerous users have experienced an issue with them.
In Windows 7 and 8.x, the Xbox One controller is known to fail automatic driver installation. This issue is well documented and is caused by the lack of an included driver with these operating systems and the inability for Windows Update to pick the driver up correctly in some circumstances. 3) Expand the branch Microsoft Xbox One Controller. 4) Right-click on the expanded Microsoft Xbox One Controller and select Update driver (On lower Windows 10 versions, select Update Driver Software). 5) Click Search automatically for updated driver software. Then Windows will install the new driver for the device.
If after you install the drivers and plug your controller in and it doesn't work, you most likely have an error code 37 under the device in device manager. It tells you 'Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)'
I'm not sure what this means, but I can tell you how to fix it.
All you need to do is go through Windows Update and update Windows 7 ONLY! You don't need to do the updates for anything else. Update it, then do a restart and your controller should work fine!
