HP Compaq nc6000 (6000) drivers are tiny programs that enable your Laptop hardware to communicate with your operating system software. Maintaining updated HP Compaq nc6000 software prevents crashes and maximizes hardware and system performance. Using outdated or corrupt HP Compaq nc6000 drivers can cause system errors, crashes, and cause your computer or hardware to fail. Furthermore, installing the wrong HP drivers can make these problems even worse.

This tool will download and update the correct HP Compaq nc6000 (6000) driver versions automatically, protecting you against installing the wrong Compaq nc6000 drivers.

Hi,

If it helps I've managed to put Windows 7 on the HP nc6000. Except for the 'HP Quick Launch Buttons' (which is XP-only software - not a driver) it works fine, and operates the full graphical Aero theme, task-bar thumbs, flip Aero etc.

You will need to ensure that the machine has two items of hardware (and a CAT5e ethernet cable) before you start though:

1) Radeon 9600 GPU: You will need a machine built with Radeon 9600 graphics - not all machines were fitted with the Radeon GPU (which has either 32MB or 64MB dedicated graphics memory). The nc6000 allows Windows 7 to utilise the Aero theme by 'borrowing' memory from the main system for use by the 9600 GPU. The Intel GPU installed in other nc6000 machines does not have the correct architecture for Aero.

2) At least 1GB of memory installed: These machines typically came preinstalled with 256MB or 512MB of RAM, but are upgradeable to a maximum of 2GB (1GB per slot). For performance, the simple maxim is that the more memory installed the better (especially since the system will be sharing it with graphics - see above).

3) CAT5e cable: Between the ethernet ports on the laptop and the router for internet connectivity (assuming that your wireless router also has ethernet ports - they usually do).
Once the hardware is out of the way, the procedure for installing the Windows 7 operating system is:

a) Connect the computer to the internet using the CAT5e cable.

b) Install Windows 7 (most of the drivers will be automatically installed from the DVD).

c) Install the latest BIOS (currently Revision F.15) from the HP Support website and install. Roboot the computer.

d) Run Windows Update from the start menu (this will find more drivers from the internet - typically Audio, WLAN, Infrared, USB etc). Un-check all the updates found, and re-check only the Hardware Driver updates (this will speed things up for getting the computer hardware/driver compliant first - general updates can be installed again later - see below). Reboot the computer when prompted.

e) Use Windows Update again to get the Radeon 9600/9700 drivers. If nothing appears, try updating drivers using 'Update Driver' via Device Manager. Reboot again.

f) Use Device Manager to identify any missing drivers. On my test machine two further drivers where missing, one for the TPM (Trusted Platform Module), and the other for the 02Micro Card Reader. Download the two appropriate driver SoftPaks from the HP Support website (the Windows XP drivers will work for this). Create two separate folders on your desktop called 'TPM' and 'O2'. Run the SoftPaks and they will request a destination for unpacking. Choose each of the desktop folders as appropriate. Allow the SoftPaks to unpack, but stop them before installing (as they also include software that you do not want/need). Then use Device Manager to 'update drivers from a specific location' and browse to your desktop. Do this for each of the two drivers and then reboot again, and you should have a full set of installed drivers when you open Device Manager. The two desktop folders can now be recycled.

g) To enable the Aero theme you need to refresh the 'Windows Experience Index' from the System window (which can be found in Control Panel). This will take several minutes, and Aero will then automatically start.

h) Now go back to Windows Update and install all the other updates found.

You should now have Windows 7 fully installed and updated ready to use.

For the age of the nc6000, it proves to be quite a good machine and does everything asked of it. By upgrading RAM to 2GB and installing a larger Hard Disk drive (they were shipped with 40GB or 60GB) performance will improve. If you feel particularly brave, the CPU can also be upgraded by using the 2.1 GHz Pentium M 765 (SL7V3) - although you need have the latest BIOS update installed (Version F.14 or higher) before upgrading.
Good luck!
