Apr 1, 2014 - Marlin Lever Action Centerfire Serial # Prefixes & Production Dating. There are many blank serial number lines that we know guns were made, but not recorded. However Model 336 production began in June 1948. I bought a Marlin 336-C in.35 Remington back in '68 or '69. At that time the difference between the 336 and 336-C was that the 'C' had a pistol grip and the 336 was a straight stock like the Winchester 94. I believe when they added the cross bolt safety, they tacked on the 'S'. P is the prefix for 1957. That is the serial number. They were under the lever until the late 60's then on the top tang after that. As far as value, it depends on condition, but I would say in good condition $250 - $350. Less if the rifle shows a lot of wear. The older ones in good condition actually bring a little more than the newer ones.
